2019 Wrap-up | Blues, Miles & Beyond @ The Blue Note Tokyo, April 2020

Hello friends, fans, and the curious –

2019 was an especially great year for me. I met and played with some great musicians.

I was in Japan celebrating my 30th anniversary of playing the Blue Note there, with an amazing band consisting of Robben Ford, Keith Carlock and James Genus. I toured with my new band The “Spykillers!” with Wolfgang Haffner who was a sheer joy to tour with. Great vibes and great music! Gary Grainger, Claus Fischer and Simon Oslender. Thank you!

I met and played with, for the first time, the incredible singer Max Mutzke from Germany as well as the legendary singer Thomas Quasthoff. With Thomas, we  played to sold out shows in Philharmonic style Halls in Germany and Austria. I feel blessed to have these incredible experiences with such great musicians. I had some super moments with Nils Landgren. He’s amazing.

I’m recording another CD this January 2020 in Nashville, with Robben Ford, Keith Carlock and Darryl Jones (Rolling Stones, Sting, Madonna). We will debut it in Japan this coming April. I have a lot more to come, but I’ll get to it another time.  Oh yeah, another Spykiller CD will be in the works as well. This time in the studio.

It’s a crazy time in the world. Let’s try to remember that the Truth is golden. and yes, it DOES make a difference. HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE! -Bill Evans

JAZZ RE-IMAGINED: AN AMERICAN JOURNEY

The SCOTTISH NATIONAL JAZZ ORCHESTRA is joined by Bill Evans on a musical expedition across America from north to south, east to west and all points in-between. Along the way, jazz meets up with bluegrass, soul, funk and fusion to make a beautiful noise on a road trip to remember.

Long-time SNJO collaborator Bill Evans is well known for conducting experimental marriages between firmly established but quite distinct forms of American music. His portmanteau projects have included such unlikely bedfellows as soul and bluegrass, and jazz and country music. Here he is reunited with the SNJO to perform a new programme of wild-at-heart, cross-genre music in the true spirit of the west. It may sound a little like a shotgun wedding to the ears of conservative purists, but the music is guaranteed to raise the bar high for courageous modern music.

RECAP: Bill Evans and Petite Blonde 2 European Tour (Spring 2018)

(Photo locations, clockwise from top left: Oslo, Norway | Lubin, Poland | Berlin, Germany | Ourense, Spain | London, England)

Hello Everyone!

I’m back from my “Bill Evans and Petite Blonde II” tour of Europe. 20 concerts in 23 days! Sold out venues. I cant remember when I had more fun on tour! We couldn’t wait to play every night, and a gig every night is just about what we did.

Here are some thoughts, in random order as they come to me. The first thing that comes to mind is that everyone in the band is a great person first and foremost. They are people you truly want to hang out with and who don’t have some crazy, whacked out ego side to their personality haha! :) None of that here!

I wrote all new music for this tour and everyone killed it! I had a blast singing as well. I look at vocals just like another instrument in the band. Another sound. If you’re not growing and pushing yourself, then you’re going backwards.

Ulf Wakenius, guitar. Incredible lines, fresh, and a joy to play with. Gary Grainger, bass – insane grooves. No one grooves harder with Dennis. They are like one person when they’re playing together. Dennis Chambers, drums. I’ve never heard him better! He has his own feel on drums. He pushed me and inspired me to push my playing forward. It felt so good with this rhythm section that you could really let yourself go.

Paris: I loved seeing a long line outside the club hours before they opened the doors. Our sound man, Richard Leutner had a birthday that day. We surprised him onstage!

Tallinn, Estonia: Great warm crowd and great stage vibe. Love it there!

Ronnie Scotts: Classic venue. Sold out months in advance. We had fun playing 2 nights there and grooving in London.

Milan, Italy: I feel very at home at the Blue Note (venue). I love Italy. The club is one of the finest in the world, I kid you not.

Spain: Always killer audiences who really want to hear you ROCK. We did. Hard! Thousands of people showed up for an outdoor gig. It doesn’t get better than that!

These are just a few thoughts. We played more venues with more awesome experiences as well! (Berlin, thanks again. Great venue!)

Thanks again for everyone who turned out for these concerts. To those who didn’t… your loss. hahahaha just kidding, hope to see you all soon!!!

Best!

Bill Evans
